Inhibitory control in childhood undergoes rapid development, where accuracy rates on simple tasks level off in early childhood, while processing and execution speeds continue to mature and improve in older cohorts.

How does the ability to stop automatic habits develop in kids?

This study is limited by its cross-sectional design, which does not track individual developmental changes over time. Also, an additional 14 participants were tested but excluded, including 9 outliers, one who failed the pretest, and 3 excluded due to recording errors. Because the sample sizes per group were relatively small, replication with larger samples is needed to confirm the exact age where performance convergence occurs.

Do children struggle with memory demands or physical self-control?

While this study successfully separates working memory load from inhibitory control, it does not explain the exact neural mechanisms driving this developmental lag. Additionally, because the sample consisted of children aged 6 to 10 from public schools in a specific region of Canada, these findings may not apply to younger preschoolers or children from vastly different cultural and educational backgrounds. Finally, the task relies on a highly simplified physical setup, meaning it cannot speak to how children manage more complex, real-world distractions or competing mental rules.
