Developments across the published libraries, ranked by evidence, connection, and — if you follow topics — relevance to you. Each card is a movement in the literature: what changed, how the evidence is labeled, and why it matters.

Each development carries an evidence label. What the labels mean

Latest is ordered by when PaperFren added the explanation, not by the study's original publication date.

Granular matter · Percolation

Slowly sheared grains follow rigidity percolation, but faster flow shifts the exponents

Evidence: Emerging

What changed

Slow flow matches rigidity percolation in an off-lattice simulation, but flow rate produces a line of exponents. The system is 2D, frictionless and athermal, percolation uses an arbitrary force threshold rather than a direct rigidity test, and β's error bars are too large for a conclusive test.

Superconductivity · Thin films

Published 2023 · Explained Sep 2026

Aluminum a few atoms thick superconducts at about three times its bulk temperature

Evidence: Preliminary

What changed

In these films the enhancement is large and monotonic, and BCS-like behaviour survives. The paper does not explain why; Tc was measured on only four films, the substrate's role was not isolated, and the odd-frequency pairing interpretation of vortex cores rests on model fits.

Microswimmers · Low Reynolds number

Published 2020 · Explained Sep 2026

The fine hairs on algal flagella do not change swimming or flow

Evidence: Preliminary

What changed

No swimming or flow difference was found; the extra turning of the mutant traced to beating asymmetry, not hydrodynamics. Hair stiffness was not measured, the mutant also lacks a cell wall, and small waveform differences could hide in six-cell samples. The hairs' actual role is untested.

Information thermodynamics · Maxwell's demon

Published 2020 · Explained Sep 2026

A feedback engine turned every bit of noisy measurement into work, in simulation

Evidence: Preliminary

What changed

In this idealised protocol, efficiency stays at 1 regardless of error; noise only lowers information per measurement. It is theory and simulation, requires instantaneous fine control of trap stiffness and centre, and dissipation from imperfect tuning is only discussed qualitatively.

Hot electrons · Plasmonics

Published 2019 · Explained Sep 2026

Light on metal nanoparticles mostly makes heat, yet hot-electron transfer is still measured

Evidence: Contested

What changed

A careful energy-conserving model puts the non-thermal share at a tiny fraction under steady light, while a pulsed strong-coupling experiment reports measurable injection. The model is for silver without interband transitions, and the experiment is one material system whose efficiency mechanism is proposed rather than measured, so neither settles the other.

Spin qubits · Silicon

Published 2016 · Explained Sep 2026

Silicon spin qubits reached microsecond coherence both with and without isotope purification

Evidence: Emerging

What changed

Purified silicon gave the longest dephasing time, but a natural-silicon device came close and demonstrated high single-qubit fidelity. Each result is from one device, neither shows a two-qubit gate, and the two use different qubit encodings, so they are not a like-for-like comparison.
