What happened
Zhang, Zhang and Zhang compared 100 randomly selected first-time students from each of three consecutive years in a postgraduate digital image processing course. Group A had traditional teaching. Group B added cases without integrating them into assessment, and improved only slightly. Group C used student-centred case-based teaching with online and offline discussion plus assessment mapped to revised Bloom's taxonomy levels, and scored significantly above both.
Why it matters
The comparison isolates something that single-arm studies of 'case-based learning' cannot: adding cases was not the active ingredient. Aligning what was assessed with what was taught was. That is a claim about coherence of course design, not about a technique.
