How Sex Differences in Creativity Shift Over Time

While girls excel in childhood creativity, gender differences in average scores vanish by age 16, although boys show more extreme scores beginning in adolescence.

What they did

In this study, a total of 775 participants divided into three distinct age groups (children, adolescents, and emerging adults) took part in a 4-year longitudinal study. Over this period, they completed four assessments of creative thinking at 1-year intervals. Creativity was evaluated using a drawing test where participants had to complete an artwork using six specific visual shapes.

What they found

The results showed that girls scored higher on average in the child group as they grew from 8 to 11 years old, and this female advantage persisted in adolescents up to 15 years old. However, these average differences disappeared starting at 16 years of age, showing overall similarity between the sexes. When looking at the spread of scores, a pattern of greater male variability emerged starting at 14 years of age, meaning more males scored at the extreme high and low ends while females clustered in the middle.

The limits

What it doesn't show

The study's design cannot establish a complete developmental picture from childhood through adulthood because it tracked three separate cohorts rather than following a single group over their entire upbringing, which introduces potential cohort effects. Additionally, creativity was measured solely through a single drawing task, which might not reflect sex differences in other creative domains like writing or verbal reasoning. Lastly, because the participants were entirely Hong Kong Chinese students, the results may not generalize to other cultural, geographical, or socio-economic populations.

Key terms

Mean analysis
A statistical approach that compares the average scores of different groups to find central tendencies.
Variability analysis
A statistical method that looks at how scores are distributed across a range, checking for differences in extreme scores and overall spread.
Greater male variability hypothesis
The theory that males show more spread in cognitive abilities, leading to more males at both the highest and lowest ends of a distribution.
Developmental theory of sex differences in intelligence
A theory proposing that sex differences in mental abilities shift over time, starting with female superiority in childhood and moving to male superiority in late adolescence.
TCT-DP
The Test for Creative Thinking-Drawing Production, a holistic drawing task used to assess creative thinking by asking participants to complete an incomplete sketch using specific shapes.

What two types of statistical analyses are contrasted in this study to explore sex differences in creativity?

Common questions

Why did the study look at both average scores and variability?

Comparing averages only shows typical performance, but variability analysis shows if one group has more people scoring at the absolute highest or lowest levels, capturing a more complete picture of performance.

Does this study prove that men are more creative than women?

No, it shows that the average creativity of men and women is nearly identical starting at age 16, although a small group of males achieved the highest scores (while another small group of males achieved the lowest).

What is a cohort effect and why does it matter here?

A cohort effect occurs when different age groups have different life experiences because of when they were born. Since the study followed three separate age groups rather than a single group over their entire upbringing, we cannot be sure if the differences are purely developmental.

How was creativity measured in this study?

It was measured using a drawing test where participants had to complete an unfinished drawing containing six small shapes, which was then scored based on criteria like completeness, unconventionality, and integration.
