What they did

The researchers recruited 179 university students for an online experiment where they watched animated video abstracts of psychological studies. Participants were randomly assigned to watch either simplified plain language summaries or complex scientific abstracts, with some watching a 4.5-minute debiasing video beforehand.

What they found

Viewers who watched the simplified plain language summaries rated the studies as significantly more credible and felt more confident in their ability to evaluate them compared to those who watched the complex abstracts. However, the simplified summaries did not significantly change their perceived ability to make decisions without consulting an expert. Crucially, watching a brief educational video designed to counter cognitive biases did not reduce this easiness effect, nor did it influence how participants intended to engage with the videos online.
