A SEMantic and EPisodic Memory Test (SEMEP) Developed within the Embodied Cognition Framework: Application to Normal Aging, Alzheimer's Disease and Semantic Dementia
What they did
Researchers evaluated memory in 103 individuals, comparing 40 young adults, 40 healthy older adults, 20 patients with Alzheimer's disease, and 3 patients with semantic dementia. They used the SEMEP test, which integrates picture matching, word recall, and recognition tasks. They also tested visual isolation by placing some target items on a distinctive yellow background.
What they found
Healthy older adults recalled fewer items than young adults and committed more confusion errors by recalling non-target pictures, though they did not make random intrusion errors. Alzheimer's patients showed severe episodic memory deficits, made unique intrusion errors, and were the only group whose memory worsened when items were presented with a yellow background. Semantic dementia patients had severe difficulties naming and matching pictures but demonstrated relatively spared recognition memory.
The limits

The study's inclusion of only three patients with semantic dementia severely limits how reliably we can generalize the findings for this clinical group. The relationship between semantic integrity and episodic memory performance is based on correlations, meaning we cannot definitively claim a causal link. Additionally, the experimental design cannot rule out that general executive control deficits, rather than specific sensory integration failures, drove the observed memory errors.
