What they did

The researchers performed 50-minute functional MRI scans on 15 individuals with Down syndrome and 14 healthy controls while they watched cartoon clips. They mapped brain connections across 7266 small regions and analyzed how different networks synchronized with each other. They also compared these patterns to brain scans from 964 individuals in an autism dataset to check for distinct characteristics.

What they found

Individuals with Down syndrome showed abnormally high synchrony across 14 out of 21 pairs of brain networks, indicating a less specialized network structure. This global synchronization was linked to lower performance IQ, with an inverse correlation of r = −0.67. Despite this overall high synchrony, their brains actually synchronized less with other viewers in response to the cartoon, indicating highly individualized processing of external stimuli.

The limits

What it doesn't show

First, because individuals with Down syndrome struggled to stay still, head motion remained a persistent confound despite rigorous data-scrubbing techniques. Second, the study uses a small sample size of 15 participants, with only 11 completing the IQ testing, meaning the brain-behavior correlations are highly exploratory. Finally, the comparison to autism is limited because the autism data was collected during a resting state, whereas the Down syndrome data was collected during a movie task.
