What they did
The researchers evaluated social cognitive skills and emotional control in 56 participants with schizophrenia, 33 with bipolar I disorder, and 58 healthy controls. They assessed facial emotion recognition using a static 60 faces task and dynamic social inference using video clips. They also collected self-reports on how often participants used nine different cognitive strategies to regulate negative emotions.
What they found
In healthy controls, superior social cognitive skills predicted more frequent use of adaptive emotional strategies like acceptance and less reliance on harmful strategies like catastrophizing. Crucially, these adaptive connections were completely absent in both the schizophrenia and bipolar disorder groups. Additionally, patients with schizophrenia exhibited the most severe impairments in overall social cognition and were uniquely prone to blaming others, whereas patients with bipolar disorder reported higher levels of self-blame.

Because this study utilized a correlational design, it cannot prove that social cognitive deficits directly cause poor emotion regulation. The clinical samples were relatively small and consisted entirely of outpatients living in the community, meaning the results might not apply to individuals during acute inpatient phases. Furthermore, the study did not control for the potential confounding effects of psychiatric medications, which many clinical participants were actively taking. Lastly, the emotion regulation measures relied entirely on self-reports, which can be prone to memory biases or a lack of conscious insight.
