What they did

Researchers tracked 210 children from a UK-based twin registry from early childhood to early adolescence. At age 4, the researchers measured six potential risk factors, including family history, speech, language, nonverbal skills, phonological awareness, and letter knowledge. They then evaluated the children's language, reading fluency, and reading comprehension at age 12 to see how well these early risks predicted later struggles.

What they found

They found that children with more risk factors at age 4 were significantly more likely to experience reading or language difficulties at age 12. Crucially, counting the number of risks (breadth) predicted outcomes just as well as accounting for the specific severity (depth) of each risk. However, predicting individual outcomes remained difficult, as some children without early risks still developed later difficulties.

The limits

What it doesn't show

The study cannot prove a causal relationship between early risk factors and later language abilities due to its observational design. The final sample of 210 children was relatively small and had an upward socioeconomic bias, which may not represent the broader population. Additionally, the researchers did not measure some known predictors like rapid automatized naming, nor could they account for the specific impact of speech therapy services children might have received.
