What they did

The researchers recruited 217 healthy participants, consisting of 109 females and 108 males. They tested participants on seven tasks, which included naturalistic hippocampal-dependent tasks (such as scene construction, autobiographical memory, future thinking, and navigation) along with laboratory tasks. Finally, participants retrospectively completed customized questionnaires to select and rank the strategies they used during these tasks.

What they found

For the naturalistic hippocampal-dependent tasks, participants predominantly used scene visual imagery, with 82.06% relying on it for scene construction. Conversely, for hippocampal-independent laboratory tasks like abstract paired associates, verbal strategies dominated, making up 58.22% of strategy use during delayed recall. These findings suggest that mental scene construction is indeed the primary strategy driving naturalistic cognitive processes linked to the hippocampus.

The limits

What it doesn't show

The study relied on retrospective strategy reports, which introduces the risk that participants forgot or misremembered some of their mental processes. Because strategy data were gathered via a predetermined list of options rather than spontaneous descriptions, the findings might not capture all subtle nuances of the strategies used. Furthermore, the researchers did not directly measure brain activity or hippocampal structures, leaving the physical relationship between strategy selection and the brain inferred rather than observed.
