What they did
The researchers developed and tested a new self-report questionnaire across several studies. In Study 1, they evaluated an 18-item questionnaire with 300 undergraduates and 302 community members to establish its structure and validity. In Study 2, they had 368 undergraduate students describe a recent academic stressor to examine how questionnaire scores relate to stress appraisals, coping, and depression symptoms. In Study 3, they examined how 47 female undergraduates reacted to a laboratory stress test.
What they found
The questionnaire successfully split cognitive adaptability into several factors, focusing on controlling negative emotions and flexibly adjusting coping methods. Higher scores on these scales were consistently associated with viewing stressors as positive challenges rather than uncontrollable threats. Additionally, these higher scores predicted fewer depressive symptoms, partly because participants used more constructive, problem-focused coping strategies.
The limits
What it doesn't show
Because Study 1 and Study 2 relied on cross-sectional data, this design cannot prove that poor cognitive control directly causes depression or bad coping. Additionally, the researchers did not measure the questionnaire's stability over time through test-retest reliability testing. Finally, the laboratory stress portion of Study 3 was restricted to a small sample of 47 female participants, meaning these specific psychological and physical stress responses might not apply to men.
