What they did

Researchers tested 45 primary school children aged 5 to 11 on their working memory, ability to ignore distractions, and divergent thinking. A subgroup of 14 children was videotaped during a drawing or storytelling task and later interviewed about their thought processes using the footage. The researchers then analyzed whether individual differences in children's real-world creative strategies matched up with their performance on laboratory tasks.

What they found

The standard laboratory tests of executive control and creativity did not reliably correlate with one another, showing a highly complex cognitive landscape. However, qualitative analysis revealed that children naturally shift between spontaneous ideas and focused planning during creative work. When combining both datasets, the researchers discovered that children who achieved the exact same creative scores on tests often did so through entirely different mental strategies.
