Creativity and the default network: A functional connectivity analysis of the creative brain at rest
What they did
The researchers selected groups of participants from an initial pool of 91 subjects based on their performance on a battery of six computerized divergent thinking tests. They compared 12 highly creative individuals with 12 less creative individuals, carefully matching them on intelligence, age, and personality. Each participant completed a scan where data were acquired for five minutes while they rested with their eyes closed.
What they found
During rest, the highly creative group showed significantly stronger functional connectivity between the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus and key regions of the default mode network. Specifically, the left inferior frontal gyrus was more strongly connected to all four default mode regions, while the right inferior frontal gyrus showed greater connectivity to bilateral inferior parietal lobes. The highly creative group also exhibited increased resting-state connectivity between the right inferior frontal gyrus and a cluster of voxels in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
The limits
What it doesn't show
The study relies on resting-state scans, which measure brain activity at rest rather than active creative performance, so it cannot prove these specific connections directly cause creative thoughts in real time. Because the final analysis compared very small groups of 12 participants each, the findings may not generalize widely and lack statistical power. Additionally, the study's correlational design means we cannot rule out other underlying biological or cognitive factors that might drive both increased connectivity and divergent thinking ability.
