What they did

Researchers conducted a study in a single high school with 97 students (including 53 males) who had a mean age of 15.78 years. Over a series of 12 total sessions, classes were randomly assigned to one of several experimental conditions: sedentary control (23 students), sedentary with cognitive training (21 students), resistance training without cognitive training (29 students), or resistance training with cognitive training (24 students).

What they found

The researchers discovered that the resistance training group without cognitive training experienced significant gains in episodic memory compared to the control group, with an effect size of 0.72. For classroom behavior, both resistance training groups showed improvements in staying focused compared to control groups. However, adding cognitive exercises directly to the workouts did not significantly improve the students' inhibition or cognitive flexibility.

The limits

What it doesn't show

This study does not demonstrate long-term cognitive improvements, as it was limited to a brief duration. The findings are highly localized because school recruiting was severely restricted by COVID-19, forcing researchers to study only a small number of classes in a single high school. Furthermore, the physical tests relied heavily on participant motivation rather than maximum physical capability, and the exercises did not reach the intended moderate-to-vigorous intensity, averaging a low exertion rating of 2.16 for the combined group and 2.25 for the exercise-only group.
