What they did

The researchers conducted a within-subjects study with 60 Dutch university students who read 64 short narratives. They manipulated whether a story's protagonist acted morally or immorally, and whether a subsequent event that befell them was positive or negative. While students read, facial electromyography (EMG) recorded real-time muscle activity in the corrugator supercilii (frowning muscle).

What they found

Participants frowned significantly more in response to immoral actions than moral ones. When something bad happened to a moral character, frowning increased, whereas a positive event reduced frowning. However, when events befell immoral characters, the expected differences in frowning disappeared entirely, indicating that language-driven simulation and moral evaluation conflicted and canceled each other out.

The limits

What it doesn't show

The study cannot determine the exact cognitive mechanism of the conflict, such as whether simulation was completely blocked or if opposing emotional signals simply canceled each other out in the muscle response. Additionally, the findings are limited by a highly homogeneous sample of mostly female university students tested in a laboratory setting, which may not represent how diverse populations read stories. Finally, because sentences were not presented word-by-word, the design cannot map the precise, millisecond-by-millisecond timeline of when simulation ends and evaluation begins.
