Researchers tested 84 students. Participants performed handwriting tasks on a digital tablet: writing their own names, writing the alphabet in order, and writing 27 dictated words of varying spelling complexity.

In the primary school group, slower motor execution and poorer letter recall correlated with more spelling errors, with name-writing speed correlating strongly with dictation speed at r = 0.77. In contrast, secondary schoolers' spelling errors were only associated with alphabet-writing duration (r = 0.41), indicating that basic motor speed no longer constrained spelling but orthographic recall still did.
