What they did
The researchers evaluated 237 children at the ages of 5½, 6½, and 8 years old who were at high risk for language or reading difficulties, alongside typically developing controls. They measured speech perception using a computer task where children distinguished between the words bee and pea along a synthetic acoustic spectrum. The study also measured language skills, rapid naming, attention, phoneme awareness, and single-word reading across these time points.
What they found
Speech perception at age 5½ directly predicted reading ability at age 6½, even after accounting for early reading, attention, and language skills. However, the expected indirect link where speech perception improves reading by boosting phoneme awareness was not supported. When classified at age 8, children with developmental language disorder showed much larger speech perception deficits than those with dyslexia alone, and both groups made more errors on easy catch trials, reflecting attention lapses.

The study cannot prove that poor speech perception causes reading difficulties because the behavioral test used also measures non-sensory factors like attention and decision-making. Since children with developmental language disorders showed the poorest performance and also struggled on simple trial endpoints, their low scores may stem from general attention struggles rather than specific auditory processing deficits. Additionally, because the sample specifically recruited children at high risk of developmental disorders, these results might not generalize perfectly to the broader population of typically developing children.
