How did early modern patients recover?

Open paper intelligence

What they did

Using doctors’ and lay accounts, including Elizabeth Walker’s report of her husband’s pleurisy, she tracks agents of recovery, concoction, crisis, and the gendered persona of Nature versus the male physician.

What they found

Illness was humoral. Concoction ‘cooked’ peccant humours; crisis was a sudden expulsion. Physicians were Nature’s servants in theory, co-governors in practice. Popular history still mocks remedies that made sense inside this rationale.

The limits

What it doesn't show

This is a conceptual history of recovery, not a clinical trial. It does not prove that bleeding or laxatives worked by modern standards.

Key terms

Nature
Personified healer inside the body who concocts and expels peccant humours.
Concoction
Nature’s heat altering putrid humours to a right temper, like cooking.
Crisis
Sudden evacuation at the height of illness, imagined as Nature’s victory in combat.
Non-naturals
Air, diet, exercise, sleep, evacuation, and passions thought to affect the body.

Common questions

Who healed besides the doctor?

God and Nature; the physician was supposed to assist Nature.

Why give a laxative to someone vomiting?

Treatment was meant to mimic Nature’s own expulsions of bad humours.

Was Nature female?

Yes in persona; that gendered the power play with the male physician.
