What they did

Researchers scanned the brains of 24 healthy adults during a dot-estimation task. Before finalizing their estimate, they were shown a guess supposedly made by either an in-group or out-group peer.

What they found

Participants conformed more to in-group guesses, matching them on 67.8% of trials compared to 65.4% for out-group guesses. Conforming to peers activated brain areas linked to rewards, like the caudate, and social processing, like the posterior superior temporal sulcus. Increased activity in social brain regions also correlated with higher levels of self-reported trust in the peer group.

The limits

What it doesn't show

First, the study used an artificial, minimal group setup, meaning it may not fully capture the stronger emotional and social dynamics of real-world groups like political parties or friend circles. Second, because the study focused on visual estimations with objective answers, the results might not translate to subjective preferences like fashion or political opinions where peer pressure is highly active. Finally, the small sample of young adults prevents generalizing these neural patterns to older populations or adolescents, whose social brain networks are known to process peer rejection differently.
