What they did

Researchers tested 180 students across eight classes in three primary schools in the Netherlands to see if short exercise bursts improve cognitive function. Each class was assigned to a 12-minute session of either aerobic, coordination, or strength exercises, or a 12-minute quiet control lesson. Students completed cognitive tests measuring attention and processing speed immediately before and after the sessions.

What they found

The researchers found that 12 minutes of classroom exercise had no significant effect on information processing speed or selective attention. Furthermore, there was no difference in cognitive outcomes among the three exercise types. The low-to-moderate physical intensity achieved in the classroom might not have been high enough to trigger the brain changes necessary to improve mental performance.

The limits
