What they did

Researchers recorded brain activity in bilingual participants reading sentences that either stayed in English or switched to Spanish. In the first study, 16 participants read alone. In the second study, 33 participants read alongside a partner who was introduced as either a monolingual English speaker or a Spanish-English bilingual.

What they found

The researchers found that language switches triggered specific electrical brain responses, including an early frontal boost and a later positive wave. The early brain response was weaker in participants who began the experiment next to a bilingual partner. Additionally, the later positive wave was reduced when reading next to a bilingual compared to a monolingual, but only for the 21 participants who actively reported that their monolingual partner would not understand the Spanish words.

The limits

What it doesn't show

This study does not show how bilinguals process language in natural spoken conversations, as participants read sentences word-by-word on a screen. The language switches used were highly unusual, occurring on function words rather than nouns or verbs. Additionally, the social effects were only clear when participants were explicitly asked to judge their partner's comprehension, meaning the brain adjustments might not happen automatically in everyday life. Finally, the subgroup analyses relied on very small groups, such as just 9 people in one condition, making these specific findings less reliable.
