What they did

The researchers tested 18 healthy individuals in a visual search task across multiple separate sessions. Participants initially saw a central arrow pointing to the most likely target location with 80% validity. After a brief delay, a peripheral box flashed in a specific color which, in the reward session, was paired with 0, 2, or 10 points.

What they found

The study showed that targets in high-reward colors sped up reaction times when they appeared at the correct location, but slowed reaction times when they appeared at the wrong location. In contrast, colors linked to 0 points did not trigger this automatic capture. Top-down focus did not prevent this value-driven distraction, as the reward effect occurred independently of the arrow's guidance.

The limits

What it doesn't show

The study did not track eye movements, meaning it is impossible to definitively prove that participants did not look away from the center. Additionally, because there was no neutral baseline condition without any colored boxes, the study cannot isolate the precise speed benefits of a rewarded cue versus the slowing costs of a distraction. Finally, the small sample size of 18 participants limits how well these findings generalize to the broader population.
