States of curiosity and interest enhance memory differently in adolescents and in children
What they did
Researchers tested N = 30 children (10–12 years) and N = 30 adolescents (13–14 years) using a trivia-based task. Participants rated their curiosity for various questions, completed an encoding task during an anticipation period, and then rated their interest in the answers. After a 20 min delay, participants completed a memory test for neutral faces shown during the task, followed by a test to recall the trivia answers.
What they found
High curiosity before hearing an answer boosted trivia memory similarly for both age groups, leading to a 7.4% average difference in recall. However, high interest in the answer after hearing it only boosted memory for the adolescents (showing a 12% memory difference) but had no significant effect on younger children, who showed only a 4% difference. Adolescents' memory also benefited significantly from positive information prediction errors, which occurred when an answer was much more interesting than initially expected.
The limits

First, because the study compared children (10–12 years) to adolescents (13–14 years) at a single timepoint, it cannot track individual developmental trajectories over time. Second, the surprise memory tests occurred after a brief 20 min delay, leaving it unclear whether these curiosity and interest-driven memory boosts persist over days or weeks. Finally, the researchers did not analyze their physiological or neural data, meaning they cannot definitively pinpoint the biological brain networks driving the observed differences.
