What they did

An fMRI study was conducted with 39 healthy older adults (aged 55 to 75, with 8 male and 31 female participants). Inside the scanner, they viewed negative images under four conditions: passively observing, labeling their emotional response (choosing from words like 'Sad' or 'Anxious'), reappraising the image (reinterpreting it to feel less distressed), or matching geometric shapes. Each block consisted of 5 trials, and after each block, participants rated their feelings of unpleasantness on a scale from 0 to 3.

What they found

Both labeling feelings and reappraising situations successfully reduced amygdala activity compared to passive viewing. These two strategies activated overlapping areas of the prefrontal cortex, including the bilateral ventrolateral prefrontal cortex and bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Directly comparing the two, reappraisal was more effective at reducing self-reported unpleasantness (average rating of 1.75) than labeling (average rating of 1.96), though both ratings were lower than passive observation (average rating of 2.24).

The limits

What it doesn't show

The study was restricted to healthy older adults aged 55 to 75 who were disproportionately female (31 of the 39 participants), which limits generalizability to other age groups or male populations. Additionally, because labeling involved selecting from written choices on a screen while reappraisal was entirely mental, the differences in brain activation might partly reflect task mechanics rather than pure emotional regulation. Finally, the researchers lacked a direct way to verify how consistently participants followed instructions during the unmonitored reappraisal blocks.
