Delta blue intensity reconstructing May–July precipitation better than ring width

Structured fields used in claim comparison tables when every cited study has a complete layer.

What they did

Authors measured MXBI, EWBI, ΔBI, and partial ring widths at five Pinus sylvestris sites along a ~500 km Swedish transect (57–62°N), then correlated PC1 chronologies with CRU climate and calibrated 1901–2010 reconstructions.

What they found

MXBI and ΔBI share the strongest common signal (median Rbar 0.43 and 0.42). ΔBI correlates 0.75 with May–July rain and reconstructs 56% of high-frequency precipitation variance, nearly 20 percentage points above full-interval ring width (37%). EWBI instead tracks February–May temperature (r=0.48).

The limits

What it doesn't show

Heartwood–sapwood color steps bias raw BI; they detrend high frequencies only, so centennial hydroclimate is not recovered. Five Swedish pine sites do not prove the method for other species or all of Fennoscandia.

Key terms

Blue intensity (BI)
Reflected/absorbed blue light used as a cheap wood-density proxy.
MXBI
Maximum latewood blue intensity.
EWBI
Average earlywood blue intensity.
ΔBI
MXBI minus EWBI, reducing some color bias.
Rbar
Mean inter-series correlation measuring chronology common signal.

ΔBI’s May–July precipitation correlation is about:

Common questions

Which parameter best tracks summer rain?

ΔBI, r=0.75 for May–July, 56% of variance.

What does EWBI record?

Late-winter to early-summer temperature, not drought.

Why prefer ΔBI over ring width?

Stronger, more stable, less autocorrelated precip signal.

What color problem remains?

Heartwood/sapwood steps around 1900–1960 in raw BI.
