What they found

Respiration was 145% and 144% higher with dwarf-shrubs or graminoids than bare/bryophyte plots. Warming raised flux on bare (+111%) and dwarf-shrub (+63%) plots only. Shrub-only warming lowered respiration 14C by 2 %Modern (older C). Ambient bryophyte ‘plant’ respiration had a 412-year mean age, showing peat priming.

The limits

Plot-scale 14C partitioning does not quantify net peatland C balance under all future vegetation states; some treatments showed no warming flux response.
