Do different types of executive function tests predict school success?

Key findings
Cognitive computer tests of working memory and shifting uniquely predicted math scores, while behavioral ratings from parents and teachers did not add extra predictive value. However, spelling scores were uniquely predicted by both the cognitive computer tasks and teacher ratings of working memory and shifting. None of the measures for response inhibition were associated with math or spelling performance, and parent ratings did not uniquely predict either academic outcome.
Methodology
Researchers evaluated 84 Dutch children in early primary school using several types of executive function measures: hands-on computer tasks, teacher questionnaires, and parent questionnaires. They measured key mental skills—working memory, response inhibition, and shifting (cognitive flexibility)—alongside intelligence. Standardized national test scores in math and spelling were collected from school records to see how well each measure predicted academic achievement.
Limitations
Because the study was cross-sectional, it cannot prove that differences in executive functioning caused the differences in math or spelling achievement. The sample size was relatively small and consisted primarily of children from middle-class to high-socioeconomic families, meaning the findings might not apply to children from lower-income backgrounds or those with learning difficulties. Additionally, the study used non-verbal tasks to measure mental skills, which may underestimate the relationship between verbal executive functioning and spelling.
