How quickly does the brain process speech acts?

The brain processes the social purpose of a word within 120 milliseconds of hearing it, at the same time it decodes the word's literal meaning.

Key findings

Brain responses for Naming and Request speech acts diverged during the 110 to 130 ms time window, showing extremely fast pragmatic processing. Requests elicited generally larger amplitude responses than Naming, particularly recruiting fronto-central motor regions and the right temporo-parietal junction. Semantic effects also emerged in this early window, which indicates that pragmatic and semantic information are processed simultaneously and interactively.

Methodology

The final sample of 18 healthy right-handed English speakers watched short videos of social interactions in a laboratory setting. Brain activity was recorded using 128 electrodes as participants viewed either a Naming or Request context using identical single nouns (representing hand-related or non-hand-related objects). Researchers then compared the brain's electrical responses across these different pragmatic and semantic conditions.

Limitations

Because the experiment used predictable, structured video blocks, it cannot tell us how the brain processes unexpected or spontaneous speech acts in real-world conversations. The study also relied entirely on isolated, single-word utterances rather than complete sentences, meaning the findings might not fully map onto natural sentence comprehension. Finally, because the spatial resolution of scalp-recorded EEG is limited, the study cannot pinpoint the exact anatomical boundaries of the active neural regions.
