Sea-ice drift steers Beaufort Gyre freshwater

How sea ice is blown in or out of the Beaufort Gyre can change liquid freshwater storage as much as the wind-driven ocean circulation itself.

Key findings
All models stored liquid freshwater under anticyclonic winds and flushed it under cyclonic winds, but end-of-run anomalies differed by about a factor of two. Models that exported ice (FESOM ~2000 km3, NorESM ~3000 km3) stored less liquid freshwater. A 10° wind rotation over ice cut BGP freshwater accumulation 15% (1175 km3) and raised BGM freshwater by 17% (1230 km3) after 34 years.
Methodology
Four ice–ocean models received identical 30-year Beaufort High wind anomalies (anticyclonic BGP vs cyclonic BGM). MITgcm extra runs rotated 10 m winds 10° anticlockwise over ice to change ice export, then freshwater, ice volume, and ice–ocean fluxes were budgeted.
Limitations
Wind perturbations are idealized and held constant; turning angles are prescribed, not predicted from a full boundary-layer scheme. Repeated forcing years in some models limit realism of the 30-year response.
