Boosting short-term memory by slowing down brain waves

Slowing down a person's individual theta brain wave frequency using electrical stimulation temporarily increases how much information they can hold in their short-term memory.

Key findings

The active group showed a temporary memory boost during the stimulation. However, this stimulation did not improve working memory performance. After stimulation ended, the active group showed higher theta wave amplitudes.

Methodology

Researchers divided thirty-three healthy human participants into two groups: the active stimulation group and the fake treatment group. Using scalp electrodes, they applied electrical currents adjusted to be slower than each participant's natural theta rhythm. They measured participants' memory capacity before, during, and after the sessions.

Limitations

The study does not show permanent memory improvement. Because the researchers could not record clean brain activity during the active stimulation, they could not directly prove that the brain waves actually slowed down during the task. Additionally, the experiment only tested young, healthy adults, meaning these findings might not apply to older populations.
