Do our mental images contain rich color details?

When we read, we create highly detailed mental simulations that include specific color properties like saturation.
Key findings
In the initial experiment, participants were 104 ms faster to verify matching objects than mismatching ones. However, this match advantage disappeared in subsequent experiments when color saturation was reduced to its lowest recognizable level, or when the images were shown in grayscale. A laboratory replication with Eighty participants confirmed that reducing color saturation eliminated the matching benefit.
Methodology
The researchers conducted four experiments using a sentence-picture verification task to test how color is mentally simulated. In a baseline study, participants read sentences that implied a color, then viewed a matching or mismatching full-color image. A final group of 136 participants completed this initial experiment. Later experiments lowered the saturation of these images to the lowest recognizable level, or removed color entirely by presenting them in grayscale.
Limitations
The study does not show if these findings hold across non-visual sensory modalities, as color is uniquely unimodal. Additionally, because the experiments relied heavily on online crowdsourced samples, the researchers could not control the hardware settings, like screen brightness or contrast, for most of the sessions. Finally, the design cannot determine the exact threshold of saturation at which color begins to interfere with mental simulation.
