Does mindfulness training reduce students' physical stress markers?

Key findings
While standard heart rate variability and breathing rates did not change significantly, the mindfulness group showed a noticeable decrease in pulse wave variability after 8 weeks. Specifically, the standard deviation of their systolic and diastolic pulse wave amplitudes decreased, signaling reduced physiological stress and better autonomic regulation. These distinct improvements did not occur in the control group, suggesting the specialized program actively helped the students' bodies relax.
Methodology
Researchers conducted a controlled trial with 80 university students assigned to either a 12-week mindfulness program or a passive control group. To track physiological stress, they recorded 10-minute sessions of electrocardiogram, finger pulse, and breathing data before the study began and again after 8 weeks. They analyzed these biological signals to look for changes in cardiovascular and respiratory variability.
Limitations
The study cannot prove long-term benefits because this early evaluation only tracked students up to 8 weeks of the program. Because participants were assigned chronologically rather than fully randomized, baseline expectations or selection bias could have influenced the outcomes. Additionally, the sample was limited by a heavy imbalance toward female students and individuals studying social sciences, making it hard to apply these results to a broader, more diverse population.
