Does negative emotion disrupt how we bind memories together?

Negative emotional elements disrupt our ability to link the different parts of a memory together, leaving us with fragmented rather than cohesive recollections.

Key findings

The researchers found that the presence of a negative person in an event reduced associative memory performance across all element pairings compared to neutral events. Furthermore, the statistical dependency—a measure of how cohesively the elements of a single memory are retrieved together—was significantly lower for negative events, indicating that emotional content breaks down memory integration. This fragmenting effect was particularly severe when the negative element was studied early in a sequence of pairs, disrupting memory even for subsequent neutral pairs.

Methodology

Across several experiments with small university student samples, researchers examined how negative emotional elements impact memory coherence. In the first experiment, a small group of 17 participants studied events shown simultaneously as triplets (a person, an object, and a location) where the person was either emotionally neutral or negative. In the second experiment (which had 26 participants) and the third experiment (which had 27 participants), events were presented as overlapping pairs over sequential trials, with the final experiment adding a 24-hour delay before testing associative memory.

Limitations

The study relies entirely on lab-based stimuli, specifically using standardized images of injured people to induce negative emotion, which may not capture the real-world complexity of experiencing traumatic events. The sample sizes are very small, limiting the statistical power and generalizability of the findings beyond university student populations. Additionally, while the computational model supports a neural mechanism of hippocampal down-modulation, direct neural activity was not measured in these behavioral experiments.
