How do autism and conduct problems affect the mind-reading brain?

While children with autism show reduced brain activity in social processing regions during mind-reading tasks, children with conduct problems and callous traits show normal brain activity in these areas.

Key findings

During the mind-reading task, the group with autism showed significantly lower activation in the medial prefrontal cortex compared to both the typically developing group and the group with conduct problems. Conversely, the brain activation in children with conduct problems did not differ from typically developing children during this task. Within the autism group, more severe social symptoms were linked to lower activation in both the medial prefrontal cortex and the right temporoparietal junction.

Methodology

The researchers scanned different groups of adolescent males using a Siemens Avanto 1.5-T MRI scanner: 16 typically developing boys, 16 with conduct problems and high callous-unemotional traits, and 16 with autism spectrum disorders. All participants were aged 10–16. While in the scanner, participants completed a non-verbal cartoon task consisting of 30 cartoons to compare how they processed cartoons showing human intentions versus cartoons showing physical causality.

Limitations

The study was restricted to a small sample of male adolescents, meaning the findings might not apply to females or other age groups. Because the design is correlational, it cannot prove that differences in brain activation directly cause the social difficulties seen in autism. Additionally, the fMRI scan cannot rule out whether alternative neural pathways are used by individuals with autism to achieve similar behavioral performance.
