How sleep loss boosts anxiety: an EEG study

Sleep deprivation increases temporary anxiety by altering brain wave patterns that control threat attention and emotional regulation.
Key findings
Staying awake for 24 hours significantly increased participants' temporary anxiety, reaction times, and sleepiness. The sleep-deprived brain showed widespread increases in electrical activity, a shift toward left-lateralized frontal alpha waves (indicating less activity in the left brain's positive-emotion centers), and stronger coupling between slow delta and fast beta waves, which correlated with higher anxiety.
Methodology
In a repeated-measures study, 17 healthy young adults completed a normal sleep session at home and a 24-hour sleep deprivation session in a lab. After each session, researchers measured their state anxiety, sleepiness, reaction times, and recorded 5-min of resting-state brain activity using 64 electrodes.
Limitations
This study cannot prove that the observed changes in brain wave patterns directly caused the rise in anxiety, as the brain-behavior relationships are correlational. Additionally, the small sample size of 17 young college students limits how well these findings apply to older adults or clinical populations. Normal sleep was also monitored only via diaries and wrist sensors rather than gold-standard clinical sleep tracking.
