What cognitive skills predict reading ability?

Key findings

Phonological awareness was the single strongest predictor of every reading skill evaluated. Together, the cognitive predictors accounted for 55% of the variance in decoding performance. Furthermore, verbal working memory uniquely predicted reading fluency and comprehension, while parent-rated attention problems specifically predicted reading fluency, with the model explaining 46% of the overall variance in fluency.

Methodology

The researchers evaluated a community sample of 182 children, ages 8–12 years, including individuals with ADHD, reading disorders, both conditions, or typical development. They measured phonological processing (phonological awareness, rapid naming, and phonological memory), verbal working memory, and parent-reported attention problems. These cognitive measures were used to predict children's performance across key reading dimensions including decoding, word recognition, reading fluency, and comprehension.

Limitations

Because this study used a correlational design and tested participants at only a single time point, it cannot prove that cognitive deficits cause reading difficulties. The reading fluency and comprehension tasks relied on short sentences and passages, meaning the results might not generalize to how attention or working memory impacts the reading of longer, more complex texts. Additionally, attention control was assessed using parent questionnaires rather than direct, experimental measures of sustained attention.
