How did Britain make a distemper vaccine?

Bresalier and Worboys trace an interwar campaign in which valued pet dogs, MRC scientists, and commercial partners produced a vaccine — and ferrets replaced dogs as lab animals.
Key findings
Fletcher hoped distemper work might clue human virus diseases even without a strict parallel. Public goodwill rested on dogs as companions from hunting packs to mongrels. Stakeholders demanded unusual engagement plus safety and efficacy. Ferrets became essential experimental animals.
Methodology
Using archives of the Field Distemper Fund, MRC, and Burroughs Wellcome, they reconstruct patronage, Laidlaw and Dunkin’s NIMR work, and why dogs’ constitutions and sociability made them bad standardised laboratory animals.
Limitations
This is a history of one British campaign, not a virology paper. It does not re-run the vaccine trials or score modern canine vaccines.
