Eye-Tracking the Split-Second Dynamics of Risky Choices

When choosing between risky financial options, people rapidly integrate both odds and payouts using automatic cognitive processes rather than slow, deliberate calculations or oversimplified shortcut rules.

Key findings

Participants made choices rapidly in under 10 seconds while still inspecting 93% of the available information, contradicting theories that people rely on simple shortcuts that ignore data. Attention shifted from probabilities early in the decision to final outcomes later on, culminating in a 'gaze-cascade' effect where participants stared increasingly at their chosen option during the final third of the trial. Higher stakes and tougher choices (smaller expected value differences) systematically increased decision times, the number of eye fixations, and pupil dilation.

Methodology

In two eye-tracking experiments, researchers monitored how 24 and 37 participants evaluated 50 different monetary gamble pairs. The researchers manipulated the average expected value of the choices to alter the financial stakes, and adjusted the difference between options to vary decision difficulty. They tracked eye movements, fixation durations, and changes in pupil size to determine whether people use simplifying mental shortcuts or rapidly pool all information automatically.

Limitations

The study only utilized gambles with positive or zero payouts, meaning these dynamics might not apply to scenarios involving financial losses or negative risks. Because pupil dilation reflects both mental effort and emotional arousal, the researchers could not definitively isolate the exact psychological driver behind the changing pupil sizes. Additionally, the small sample consisting entirely of young German university students limits how well these findings generalize to older populations or highly professional financial traders. Finally, because eye tracking only registers overt visual focus, the study cannot capture internal, covert cognitive processing where a person thinks about an option without looking directly at it.
