Does breathing at your resonance frequency actually improve HRV and blood pressure?

In 95 randomized students, 15 minutes of resonance-frequency breathing raised positive mood and LF/HF HRV and lowered PASAT systolic BP versus sitting quietly; RF+1 was in between.

Key findings

Groups matched at baseline. Only the RF group increased positive mood and LF/HF after practice. Both breathing groups lowered BP during practice, but only RF showed lower SBP during the PASAT. Higher post-practice LF/HF predicted lower PASAT SBP (β=−0.21).

Methodology

Randomized participants to breathe at individually determined RF, at RF+1 breath/min, or sit quietly for 15 min, then complete an 8-min PASAT and 10-min recovery while tracking HRV, BP, and mood.

Limitations

A 95-person student sample and a single 15-minute session cannot prove clinic HRVB courses change disease outcomes; time-domain HRV (SDNN/RMSSD) did not differ.
