Social Mind-Reading Profiles in Autistic Children

Autistic children without intellectual disabilities fall into two distinct mind-reading groups, but even those with strong testing skills struggle to apply them in daily life.

Key findings

The analysis revealed two distinct groups: 22 children had higher mind-reading skills and 30 children had lower skills. While the higher-performing group matched typically developing peers on structured laboratory tests, they still struggled with real-world social application. The lower-performing group exhibited significantly worse communication issues, more severe symptoms, and poorer daily living skills.

Methodology

Researchers assessed 52 children with autism and 37 typically developing children aged 7 to 11 on explicit mind-reading tasks and parent-reported real-world social application. They grouped the autistic children based on these scores and compared how these groups differed in daily living skills, symptom severity, and communication abilities.

Limitations

The study relied mostly on parent-reported questionnaires rather than direct behavioral observations in natural settings like classrooms, which may introduce observer bias. It also used a cross-sectional design, meaning it cannot track how these profiles change as children grow up. Additionally, the small sample was mostly male, meaning the findings might not accurately represent autistic girls.
