What happened
Gosselin and colleagues (2017) found total sleep deprivation impaired accuracy across sensory, working, and permanent memory tasks in young adults (ns of 12 and 18). Partial restriction had smaller effects (about 5.3% less auditory accuracy; 5.4% more response failures; 6.7% more PVT lapses). Alfini et al. (2019) found older adults kept working-memory accuracy and a positivity bias after total sleep deprivation, though the reaction-time positivity bias vanished under high load.
Why it matters
A single sentence like 'sleep loss impairs working memory' hides an age split in this corpus. Both studies are small and selective; together they are a debate, not a field-wide reversal.
