Key findings
Older adults demonstrated a clear positivity bias, showing faster and more accurate responses to positive pictures than to negative ones. This bias, along with general working memory accuracy and speed, remained unchanged even after a night of total sleep deprivation. However, the positive bias in reaction times vanished under high mental workload, suggesting that cognitive demand can override emotional prioritization.
Methodology
The researchers evaluated 48 healthy older adults, consisting of 32 women, who were split into two groups. 24 participants were assigned to a control group who slept normally at home, and 24 participants underwent total sleep deprivation in a lab overnight. The following day, participants completed an emotional working memory task where they observed and recalled positive, negative, and neutral images under different levels of cognitive difficulty.
Limitations
Because the study only assessed a brief task lasting approximately 12 minutes, it does not show whether older adults can maintain their performance during longer, more demanding mental challenges. Additionally, the participants were highly screened for exceptional health, meaning these findings cannot be generalized to typical older populations experiencing common medical or chronic sleep issues. Lastly, the behavioral measurements do not reveal if the sleep-deprived brain was using alternative, exhausting neural strategies to keep performance intact.
