Short answer
Chatbot-supported project work improved measured learning performance with a large effect while leaving every motivational and self-efficacy measure unchanged.
What happened
Yin and colleagues assigned two classes of second-year TESOL and multimedia education students in Malaysia to chatbot-supported project-based learning or a traditional control, holding content, duration and instructor constant. The chatbot group scored significantly higher on course learning performance with a large Cohen's d. Need for cognition, motivational beliefs, creative self-efficacy and perception of learning did not differ significantly between groups.
Why it matters
Educational chatbots are usually sold on engagement — that students will want to learn more. Here the performance gain arrived without any of the motivational measures moving, which means whatever produced it was not increased enthusiasm. That is a more useful finding than a positive result on everything, because it narrows what the mechanism can be.
