Short answer
Ultrashort- and short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids made up most of the total PFAA burden in these homes and people, a fraction routine monitoring largely misses.
What happened
Researchers targeted 47 PFAS in dust, drinking water, urine and serum from 81 US participants and their homes, detecting 39. Ultrashort- and short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids accounted for 69–100% of total perfluoroalkyl acids across matrices. Median trifluoroacetic acid in dust was 220 ng/g, and two- and three-carbon compounds dominated dust, water and serum alike.
Why it matters
Regulatory attention and most monitoring methods target long-chain PFAS, which are the ones with established toxicology. If the great majority of what people carry is short- and ultrashort-chain, then the measured burden and the actual burden are different quantities — and the health question for the dominant fraction has barely been asked.
