Diabetes research, explained
20 open-access diabetes studies, each with a flashcard deck and a quiz.
- Night shifts and type 2 diabetes risk
Longer rotating night-shift work associated with higher type 2 diabetes risk in two large female nurse cohorts.
- How does TXNIP control muscle glucose uptake?
Human studies show TXNIP is repressed by insulin, induced by glucose, elevated in dysglycaemia, and can inhibit peripheral glucose uptake.
- How risky is diagnosed NAFLD for cirrhosis and liver cancer?
In ~19 million European adults, coded NAFLD/NASH carried ~4.7× cirrhosis and ~3.5× HCC hazard vs matched controls, with diabetes the strongest predictor.
- How well do health systems manage diabetes in lower-income countries?
Across >800,000 adults in 28 LMICs, diabetes prevalence was 8.8% and total unmet need along the care cascade reached 77%, with only ~23% achieving control.
- GDM associated with higher later diabetes and heart risks
Women with gestational diabetes had sharply higher later type 2 diabetes risk and elevated hypertension and ischemic heart disease risk versus matched pregnant controls.
- Muscle ATP defect in diabetes-prone offspring
Lean insulin-resistant offspring of type 2 diabetic parents showed blunted insulin-stimulated muscle ATP synthesis versus matched controls.
- Glucose Buddy app associated with improved type 1 HbA1c in a trial
Adults with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes using Glucose Buddy plus weekly educator texts lowered HbA1c versus usual care.
- Common SNPs explain much of MetS-trait heritability
Using ARIC/FHS SNP relationships, authors show common GWAS markers capture a large share of narrow-sense heritability for MetS-related traits (~39% of h² via hg²) and that genetic correlations between traits track phenotypic correlations.
- Healthier habits associated with lower T2D microvascular complication risk
Among 15,104 UK Biobank T2D patients followed median 8.1 years, 4–5 low-risk lifestyle behaviors vs 0–1 linked to HR 0.54 for composite microvascular complications; biomarkers mediated ~23% of the association.
- Does lower thyroid function raise the risk of type 2 diabetes?
People with lower thyroid function, even within the normal range, were somewhat more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, especially if they already had prediabetes.
- How much low-dose IL-2 boosts protective T cells in type 1 diabetes?
A single very low dose of the immune signalling drug IL-2 raised regulatory T cells in a dose-dependent way in adults with type 1 diabetes, and doses that gave 10% and 20% increases were identified and well tolerated.
- High-phenol olive oil shifts inflammatory gene programs in MetS
In 20 MetS patients, a randomized crossover of high-phenol (398 ppm) vs low-phenol (70 ppm) virgin olive oil breakfasts changed 98 PBMC genes postprandially, including inflammation-linked transcripts.
- Is tirzepatide linked to fewer deaths than GLP-1 drugs?
In 140,308 US adults with type 2 diabetes, tirzepatide was associated with lower all-cause mortality (AHR 0.58) and fewer major cardiovascular and kidney events than GLP-1 receptor agonists.
- Faster epigenetic aging tracks metabolic syndrome risk in CARDIA
In CARDIA adults with blood methylation clocks, higher MetS severity scores associated with intrinsic epigenetic age acceleration, and year-20 IEAA predicted incident MetS by year 30 (OR 1.05 per unit).
- Do new diabetes drugs show pancreatitis signals in FAERS?
FAERS 2019–2021 reports link pancreatitis strongly to DPP-4 inhibitors and GLP-1 RAs, with liraglutide leading within GLP-1s.
- How common are obesity-linked comorbidities by age?
Among ~6.9 million insured Americans, obesity diagnoses carried much higher hypertension, dyslipidemia, depression/anxiety, and prediabetes rates—especially stark in ages 18–39.
- What drives the rising cost of diabetes in urban China?
In 44,994 urban Chinese patients, mean annual diabetes-related medical costs rose from $1,293 (2014) to $2,093 (2019); hospitalization multiplied cost 2.23× and cardiovascular/kidney complications added ~65%/54%.
- Can kitchen curcumin help lipid and diabetes pathways via ROS?
This review argues curcumin eases lipid-metabolism diseases mainly by dialing down oxidative stress.
- Do GLP-1 drugs show pancreatitis safety signals?
Across 6,751 FAERS ICSRs (plus 39 case-series patients), AP reporting signals appeared for all studied GLP-1 RAs, especially exenatide and liraglutide.
- Do incretin drugs flag biliary harm in FAERS?
Among 2,215 biliary FAERS reports, DPP-4 inhibitors had ROR 3.09 (sitagliptin 3.46); overall GLP-1 RAs were called non-significant (ROR 1.60) but semaglutide (4.06) and liraglutide (3.88) signaled.
