What they did
The researchers compared 16 healthy young adults and 16 healthy older adults on their ability to remember 28 unrelated word pairs paired with visual sketches. Memory performance was tested immediately, 30 minutes later, and 7 days after the initial learning phase. Throughout the intervening week, participants kept daily sleep diaries to track their sleep duration, quality, and the number of times they woke up during the night.
What they found
While both groups recalled similar amounts of word pairs immediately and 30 minutes after learning, the older adults showed a significantly higher forgetting rate and lower recall performance when tested 7 days later. Furthermore, older adults reported waking up more frequently and for longer periods during the night compared to younger adults. Within the older group, waking up more often during the night was associated with worse memory recall at the 7-day mark.
The limits
What it doesn't show
First, because sleep quality was assessed using self-reported daily diaries rather than objective brain-monitoring equipment, these subjective sleep measures may not perfectly capture actual sleep architecture. Second, the study's correlational nature means we cannot definitively prove that waking up during the night causes accelerated forgetting, only that the two are linked. Lastly, the sample size of 16 participants per group is relatively small, meaning the findings may not represent all older populations.
