What they did

Researchers compared how sleep and wakefulness affect different memory components in 61 children aged 8 to 12. Children learned separate lists of word pairs separated by a 1-hour interval (to establish different contexts, or 'sources') and were later tested on their memory for the word pairs themselves (items), which list they came from (source), and both combined. To examine age-related differences, the researchers also tested 37 adults under similar conditions.

What they found

Post-learning sleep overall reduced forgetting of word pairs and enhanced memory for the list context compared to staying awake. However, sleep did not improve the combined memory of both the word pair and its specific list. Furthermore, children showed a greater tendency than adults to remember word pairs independently of their context, suggesting that children's brains may naturally isolate item memories during consolidation.

The limits

What it doesn't show

The study cannot determine whether sleep actively unbinds word pairs from their context or simply leaves the bond unaffected. Because it used a 1-hour interval between lists to define temporal context, the findings might not apply to other context types, such as spatial location. Additionally, the small sample sizes within each subgroup (such as 17 to 21 children per condition) limit statistical power.
