Aerobic Exercise Alleviates the Impairment of Cognitive Control Ability Induced by Sleep Deprivation in College Students: Research Based on Go/NoGo Task
What they did
Researchers recruited 30 healthy college students to participate in a balanced crossover study examining how sleep deprivation and exercise affect cognitive control. Participants completed a Go/NoGo task using food and non-food images under normal sleep and sleep-deprived conditions, and were then tested again after either resting or performing 30 minutes of moderate-intensity cycling. The researchers measured task performance, blood glucose, and blood serotonin levels at several intervals up to one hour after the intervention.
What they found
Staying awake all night significantly increased errors on the self-control task and decreased blood serotonin levels. However, a 30-minute session of moderate cycling immediately reversed these impairments, increasing response accuracy by up to 9.51 percent and decreasing reaction times by over 52.21 milliseconds. This cognitive boost from exercise lasted for up to one hour and was strongly linked to an increase in blood serotonin levels.
The limits

This study cannot establish a direct causal pathway in the brain because it measured serotonin in peripheral blood rather than cerebrospinal fluid. Additionally, the sample was limited to 30 young, healthy college students, meaning the results may not generalize to older adults or individuals with pre-existing metabolic or sleep disorders. Finally, the study only tracked cognitive performance for one hour post-exercise, leaving it unclear how long the protective benefits actually persist.
