Authors compared 1980–2018 cause-specific mortality in the Veneto “Red area” (30 municipalities, ~153,525 people) with age- and sex-specific rates in the surrounding provinces, using SMRs, birth-cohort cumulative SMRs, and calendar-period splits around 1985 contamination.
What they found
From 1985–2018 there were 51,621 deaths versus 47,731 expected (SMR 108; 3,890 excess). No excess in 1980–1984. Later periods showed higher SMRs, including kidney cancer (SMR 173 in one analysis) and testicular cancer in Red area A (SMR 256 for 1985–1999). Median serum PFOA was 14 ng/mL.
The limits
What it doesn't show
This is an ecological SMR study, not individual PFAS doses. Private wells misclassify some Red area B residents, food export may expose people outside the zone, and cancer survival changes complicate testicular-cancer mortality.
