What they did
Researchers compared the effects of a single cycling session against a reading control on attention networks in 30 highly fit college students. The exercise group performed a spinning workout for 40 minutes, which included 5 minutes of warm-up, 30 minutes in a target heart rate zone, and 5 minutes of cool down. Afterwards, all participants completed the Attention Network Test while their brain waves were recorded using a 64-channel EEG cap.
What they found
Exercising significantly enhanced conflict resolution, with the exercise group showing a smaller conflict effect of 76.10 milliseconds compared to 93.95 milliseconds in the control group. Brain recordings showed a larger P3 wave amplitude for both the alerting and executive control networks after exercise, indicating greater neural resource allocation. However, no behavioral benefits were found for the alerting or orienting networks.
